Manchester United is building a new stadium for about 1.29 billion dollars. Their stadium is supposed to seat approximately 100,000 people. Their stadium is currently Old Trafford, which holds about 74,000 people. Their new stadium is projected to be finished between 2030 to 2031.
United said that this new stadium will give 92,000 new jobs, and more than 17,000 homes around the stadium, and attract approximately 1.8 million visitors a year. Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, said, “It would be the world’s greatest football stadium. He added, “Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best areas in world sport.”
Their current stadium, Old Trafford, has been the home of long dominance in soccer, including a historic treble(winning three trophies in one season) in 1999, which involved stars like David Beckham and Peter Schmeichel, who is considered to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, when they lifted the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup trophies.
Manchester United still holds the record for the most top-flight league titles, with 20. This team has won 13 FA Cups, 6 League Cups, and 21 FA Community Shields, alongside 3 UEFA Champions League Titles. Man United is currently 14th in the Premier League, one of their worst seasons so far.
In the past couple of years, Manchester United has had many managers, including Erik Ten Haag, Ruben Amorim, and Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, the best manager in their entire history is Sir Alex Ferguson. He was the manager at United from 1986 to 2013. This was almost 27 years. Sir Alex Ferguson managed 810 games. Out of those 810 games, he won 528, tied 168, and only lost 114. He has won Manchester United 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League Titles, 5 FA Cups, 2 UEFA Champions League Titles, and many other accomplishments.
The players during the time he was coaching in 2008 were Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Park Ji-Sung, Rio Ferdinand, Van der Sar, John O’Shea, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidić, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, and Dimitar Berbatov. Some of the best substitutes were Carlos Tevez, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Nani, Daniel Welbeck, Frazier Campbell, Fábio Silva, Rafael Silva, and Anderson Oliveira.
Back to Manchester United’s stadium, it’s projected to be the largest football stadium in the entire UK. It will feature 3 massive umbrellas that will make the stadium visible from a whopping 25 miles/40 kilometers away.
On March 25, 2025, Manchester United rejected the offer for a free 80,000 seater stadium before Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 2 billion euro plan. Greater Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham, told the Financial Times he was expecting more than 200 million euros in UK Government transport investment, to allow the stadium to be built, and unlock a local growth scheme “that knocks everything else into the shade.”
Even though Manchester United has had this old stadium for 110 years, this new stadium will mark a new era for Manchester United football.
