On March 10, hundreds of movie lovers from all over the world got together to watch the Oscars: the biggest stamp of achievement for aspiring filmmakers. Ever since it was created in 1929, hundreds of nominated actors, directors, and music producers have lined up every year to see who’ll win the prestigious award. Winners deliver heartwarming and emotional speeches about their experiences to the audience.
This year’s Oscars were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, creator of his own late night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live. He made jokes about movies like Killers of the Flower Moon and Madame Web in his humorous opening speech. Kimmel also spoke briefly about Barbenheimer, the rivalry between two of the biggest films of the year, Barbie and Oppenheimer.
The impressive lineup of the most-nominated movies this year included Oppenheimer, Barbie, Anatomy of a Fall, Poor Things, The Holdovers, and more. The most notable winners, earning rounds of applause from the audience, are:
- Oppenheimer, winning “Best Picture”
- Cillian Murphy from Oppenheimer, winning “Actor In a Leading Role”
- Emma Stone from Poor Things, winning “Actress In a Leading Role”
- Christopher Nolan from Oppenheimer, winning “Directing”
- Oppenheimer, winning “Cinematography”
- The Boy In The Heron winning, “Best Animated Film”
- The Zone of Interest winning, “International Feature Film”
- “What Was I Made For,” by Billie Eilish winning, “Music (Original Song)”
So many films and talented people were nominated, but only a few won. Sometimes the results don’t meet viewers’ expectations. Seventh grader Tanushri Ciganehalli expressed her thoughts on Boy In the Heron winning Best Animated Film. “The Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse movie was nominated, but I feel like it should’ve won because it was amazing…I liked how the plot was built off in relation to the first movie and the themes it focused on.”
Throughout the show, many musicians performed the songs nominated for best original song. Jon Batiste sang a soulful rendition of “It Never Went Away” with a piano, followed by Becky G performing “The Fire Inside” with a choir of little girls by her side. Scott George and the Osage Singers performed “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” before Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken.” Finally, Billie Eilish and Finneas O’ Connel performed What Was I Made For? from the Barbie soundtrack.
To summarize this year’s Oscars award show, some fans didn’t get to see their favorite movies win, but the films that did win can still be appreciated and celebrated. Cinema has been around since the 1800s, and the Oscars is just one way of celebrating the art of filmmaking. Congratulations to this year’s winners!
