Many of us have witnessed scenes in movies or TV series depicting robots seizing control or artificial intelligence taking human jobs. With AI increasingly becoming a part of our daily lives in recent years, numerous individuals are pondering whether this depiction will turn into a reality, and some question, “Could AI potentially take over the world?”
Well, the straightforward answer to that question is no. AI has been around for longer than most people realize and has proven to be very beneficial. AI was first introduced to the world more than 6 decades ago in 1950, when Alan Turing published a game called “The Imitation Game.” This was a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit human-like behavior and intelligence.
In the coming years, more and more engineers start to advance their AI and find ways for it to further increase their efficiency.
In 1980, the first conference for an AI known as XCON was held. XCON was designed to automatically pick computer systems based on customers’ needs. From there, hundreds of companies started using AI to further advance their products and businesses to fit the needs of customers. FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google) companies started using AI in the mid 2000s, and after that, it became more mainstream.
According to IBM, “Artificial intelligence, or AI, is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities.” In recent years, many companies have started producing generative AI for the public to use. This focuses on creating new responses, designs, data, and content. It can produce a variety of outputs, so no two answers will be the same.
Although AI automates some tasks that used to be done by humans, it’s highly unlikely that it will put people out of jobs. Instead, it can help employees in maximizing their productivity.
Companies and their employees aren’t the only ones using AI. According to a survey taken in 2023, almost 46% of students are using artificial intelligence to help them complete schoolwork, cheat on tests, and do research. Many schools, including Fallon, have banned AI on their school Chromebooks to avoid cheating, although stopping students from using it at home is proving difficult. However, some students use it to help them practice for exams, get personalized learning that teachers cannot provide, and so much more.
In conclusion, AI will most likely not take over the world; instead, it can help us advance our society and education.
