Get ready to get swept away by more of the enchanting melodies and lyrics of Taylor Swift’s newly released album: “The Tortured Poets Department.” To end the night of the 2024 Grammys with a grand total of fourteen Grammy awards, Taylor announces,“I want to say thank you to all my fans, by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for two years, which is that my brand new album..called The Tortured Poets Department [is being released]!” Referring to her previous albums all having a different “catch,” fans find this release to be more emotional and more related to her past.
It has been almost two years of anticipation from fans, waiting for Taylor to release a new album. During February 4th, 2024, Taylor introduced her new album through a heartfelt speech for the fellow swifties, “This is my 13th Grammy—which is my lucky number, I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that,” she exclaims. Taylor also revealed the cover of the album captioned, “All’s fair in love and poetry…” Fans were also told the release date of the album, April 19th 2024.
The tracklists in total, containing 31 songs, of this album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” promised to send fans on a rollercoaster with a very much “poetic flair”. Swift also released a second bonus version of this album, “The Tortured Poets Department: Anthropology.” Every song on her album, including the eerie beauty ballad “Whispers in the Dark,” and the emotional love statement of “So Long, London” demonstrates the emotional storytelling and vibe given off. The stern and questionable beats of “Fortnight” and the catchy pop beats of “Dancing in the Rain” are just a taste of the musical adventure that fans can enjoy listening to from this highly anticipated album. Although Swift has done many emotional and personal albums that are unlike her “pop” and “high energy ones”, this album has seemed to be more unique, possibly summarizing her stages of love and grief as a whole.
Swift’s fans had many theories about this new album, one of which being that the album has something to do with Paul Mescal and Joe Alwyn — Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriends. Before the release itself, Pragna Prahallad (8) shared, “Based off of the track list I think, it’s about Joe Alwyn since the song ‘So Long, London’ is mentioned, and maybe also Harry Styles because of the song ‘But Daddy I Love Him.’” In the past, rumor has it that Taylor had a WhatsApp group chat with the two of them titled “The Tortured Man Club”. This could possibly have to do with “The Tortured Poets Department”, considering how similar they both sound.
All in all, Taylor Swift’s album announcement had fans raving in anticipation and excitement. As the countdown till the release date came sooner and sooner, many theories and ideas started to spread drastically in social media and spark interest. So far, each day it has been claimed that over 300 million people have streamed this album. With her previous track records, and recognition, there was no doubt in this being just another one of her big masterpieces.
