This year, Fallon has once again expanded student opportunities by adding some new electives including Environmental Leadership and Cooking on a Budget.
Environmental Leadership raises awareness about recycling and has fun activities that allow students to actively make a difference. The teacher for Environmental Leadership, Mrs. Louris, says, “I think it’s so important for young people to be aware of the environment and how they could do something to help it.”
The elective leaves a lot of room for independence and encourages creativity. “We do a lot of fun projects, and you have a lot of choice in what you do,” Mrs. Louris continues to explain. This year, the students have already achieved a lot. According to Mrs. Louris, “They set up the whole paper-cardboard recycling system.”
Students say the most enjoyable part of the class is engaging with their peers at Fallon. Anaika Deshpande remarks, “The best part is interacting with the students at Fallon, helping them, and encouraging them to recycle.”
Environmental Leadership students hope their work will inspire others to join them. “We want to encourage more people to do more recycling and help our jobs,” Amy Gao says.
Environmental Leadership offers students opportunities to make important contributions to our school community and learn about sustainability along the way. The class includes various projects and plenty of room for creativity, allowing students to make a difference in a way that matters to them.
The second new elective here at Fallon is Cooking on a Budget. Cooking on a Budget offers students a fun culinary experience where students cook, take notes, and learn the history and origins of foods.
One thing the students in Cooking on a Budget enjoy is Mrs. Bogue’s no-homework policy in the class. One student stated, “We take a lot of notes in class, but the fact we have no homework makes up for it.”
The highlight of the chefs’ days are the cook days- their interactive classes where the students experiment with different ingredients, try new techniques, and have fun with their classmates. “My favorite part of this class is probably the cooking days, and I wish we had them more often because they’re fun,” Lucas Breed exclaims.
Another great thing Fallon’s Cooking on a Budget class does is that they share their food, “One thing we do to impact Fallon is after cooking days, we give the food we make to teachers,” Nirvaan Techandani explains.
Cooking on a Budget’s hands-on experiences and informational presentations give students opportunities that will benefit them in the future.
With new electives like Environmental Leadership and Cooking on a Budget Fallon continues to offer fun and engaging ways to explore their hobbies and develop some practical skills. These classes aren’t just about knowledge, but about making an impact in our school and building a sense of community.
