On February 4, 2025, a tragic mass shooting occurred at Campus Risbergska, an adult education center in Örebro, Sweden. The shooting resulted in the deaths and injuries of ten or more people. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has recounted this incident as the “worst mass shooting in Swedish history.” The crime was counted as murder, arson, and aggravated weapons offenses.
The attack happened around 12:30 PM when a 35-year-old man with an automatic weapon opened fire within the school. The attacker, who was not previously known to law enforcement and had no suspected gang affiliations, is rumored to be one of the deceased or injured. “We can’t rule out other suspects, and that’s something we are continuing to work on in this intensive phase now: why it happened and if there are other possible suspects,” The Örebro police chief added. Authorities currently think he acted alone, and no terrorist motives have been identified yet. In addition to the fatalities, six people had minor injuries, with one being in serious condition. The victims were all adults and were quickly taken to Örebro University Hospital for medical attention.
Eyewitnesses report terrifying scenes as the gunman roamed the hallways, making students and staff seek safety underneath the tables and classrooms and take risky runs for cover because of the sound of automatic gunfire. Andreas Sundling released this statement while taking cover in a classroom. “We heard three bangs and screams,” Sundling said. “Now, we’re sitting here waiting to be evacuated from the school. The information we have received is that we should sit and wait.” Luckily there were fewer students there than normal because many had gone home after taking an exam. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, evacuating the premises. Local authorities have told residents to avoid the school as the investigations continue.
Swedish police said Tuesday an operation is happening at the center, warning of a “suspected serious crime of violence.” The motive behind this terrible act remains unclear. Police have started an investigation into charges of murder, arson, and weapons offenses. They are working to identify the victims and gather information to understand the events leading up to the attack. Prime Minister Kristersson expressed his sorrow, stating, “This is a very painful day for all of Sweden.” King Carl XVI Gustaf also stated his condolences to the victims’ families and all those affected by the tragedy.
Despite Sweden’s enforced severe gun laws, the country has witnessed a worrying increase in gun violence in recent years. However, mass shootings, especially in educational institutions, are rare, making this incident a surprising and devastating event for the entire nation.
As the community grapples with this tragedy, national leaders and local authorities draw attention to the importance of unity and support for the victims and their families. The investigation is underway, and as more information becomes available, we can only hope that the lives of those wounded and their families improve.
