On February 2nd, 2025, Doechii shocked everyone with her stunning performance, outfit, and amazing Grammy Wins. She has steadily been gaining more fame over the years. Doechii’s original name was Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, but after years of bullying, she created a new identity, Doechii. Five years ago, Doechii was broke, jobless, and didn’t have a place to stay. Anthony Tiffith Jr., the president of TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment) was blown away by her talent and told her to come to Los Angeles. In 2022, the renowned label behind SZA and Kendrick Lamar signed Doechii and gained another future superstar. Doechii was battling addiction, depression, and a broken heart, and she decided to channel these feelings into her song “Denial is a River” as part of her debut album Alligator Bites Never Heal.
Doechii saw all her hard work pay off as her song blew up on TikTok, with people all around the world finding her relatable. Critics raved about her song, saying, “Doechii doesn’t miss”.
In the 67th annual Grammy Awards, Doechii was in the running for four golden gramophones, including Best New Artist. She also performed at the Grammys with a stunning production of “Catfish” and “Denial Is A River”—both featured on Alligator Bites Never Heal. Her mixtape won Best Rap Album and was nominated for Best Rap Performance. In her acceptance speech, Doechii told people, “Tampa has so much talent. Labels, go to Tampa, there’s talent there.”
Doechii became the 3rd woman to win Best Rap Album following Lauryn Hill and Cardi B, forever marking her name down in the history books. After her successful night at the 2025 Grammy Awards, Doechii became one of the most exciting names in hip-hop. Four different songs from her debut album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, ranked top 40 in the United Kingdom. Doechii’s hit song, “Denial is a River” also went on the Official Streaming as No. 28.
Doechii has become an inspiration for many young girls all over the world, and she has proved that you can overcome anything as long as you put hard work into it. In her acceptance speech for her Grammy win she said, “Anything is possible, you are exactly who you need to be, to be right where you are, and I am a testimony.”
“I’ve bared my life. I went through so much. I dedicated myself to sobriety and God told me that I would be rewarded and that he would show me just how good it can get,” she said, choking up. Doechii finished off her speech by saying, “Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough, or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud.”
