On February 9th, the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX (59). Enthusiastic fans were excited for this game, as the Chiefs were the NFL’s best offensive team, and the Eagles were the NFL’s best Defensive team. The game was filled with many exciting and unexpected moments. Here’s a recap of how the game went down and some surprising moments!
The game started slowly. The first touchdown came in the first quarter, with 6:15 left on the clock, when Jalen Hurts rushed for 1 yard, scoring on a quarterback sneak play. This gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead to start the game. Both teams traded possessions without scoring, and the first quarter ended with the Eagles up 7-0.
The second quarter began with Jalen Hurts throwing an interception to Chiefs defender Byan Cook. The Chiefs, however, could not put points on the board. The Eagles got the ball back and got into field goal range. On the fourth down, Eagles kicker Jake Elliot nailed a 48-yard field goal attempt to give the Eagles a 10-0 lead. Kansas City got the ball back but found themselves in a 3rd and 16 attempt. Kansas City Quarterback Patrick Mahomes dropped back and threw the ball straight into an Eagles defender, Cooper DeJean, who returned the interception for a touchdown. This defensive touchdown by DeJaen on his 22nd birthday gave Philadelphia a 17-0 lead. At this point, Chiefs fans were worried, as Kansas City was down multiple scores and had put up no points in the game. Later in the quarter, Mahomes threw another interception to Zach Baun of the Eagles, adding to fans’ anxiety, as their hopes of a three-peat seemed to slip away! The Eagles took advantage of the interception, and two plays later, Jalen Hurts found A.J. Brown in the end zone for another Eagles Touchdown, making the score 24-0 in favor of the Eagles to end the first half of the game.
The 3rd quarter got off to a very slow start, with the two teams trading possessions. Kansas City had many opportunities to turn the game around, but they could not make the plays they needed. Finally, with 5:19 remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Eagles scored a 29-yard field goal and put the first points of the quarter on the board, making the score 27-0. Chiefs fans felt there was no coming back from this point. Three minutes later, one of the best plays of the game occurred. On the Eagles’ first play after getting the ball back, Jalen Hurts threw the ball downfield to wide receiver Davante Smith for an incredible 46-yard touchdown, setting the score at a shocking 34-0. After what seemed like forever, the Chiefs finally scored a touchdown with 34 seconds remaining in the quarter. Patrick Mahomes threw the ball to Xavier Worthy for a 24-yard touchdown. The Chiefs attempted a 2-point conversion, but they could not convert it. The Chiefs finally got some points on the board and ended the quarter with a score of 34-6 in favor of the Eagles.
The fourth quarter began with a 48-yard field goal from the Eagles, making the score 37-6. At this stage, the game looked over as the Chiefs would need to score 31 points in 9 minutes. The Chiefs got the ball back, but on one of the first plays of the drive, the Eagles’ defense sacked Patrick Mahomes, who fumbled the ball. The Eagles recovered the fumble and went on to kick another field goal, making the score 40-6. The Chiefs got the ball back and finally started making plays. On a 3rd and six play, Mahomes found DeAndre Hopkins for a touchdown. They went for another 2-point conversion, and this time, it was successful, making the score 40-14 with 3 minutes to play. On their next possession, the Chiefs’ Mahomes threw a deep ball to Xavier Worthy for his second touchdown. A 2-point conversion made the score 40-22. Philadelphia regained possession and drained the last minute of the game clock to end the game with a Super Bowl win.
Winning the Super Bowl is the most outstanding achievement in the NFL, and the Eagles did just that! The game was eventful and exciting, with many points scored and key plays captivating football fans. Overall, the Eagles were the better team and proved it throughout this game, dominating the Kansas City Chiefs.
