The Met Gala is one of the most discussed celebrity events of the year. This year, the theme for the celebrities was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The significance behind this theme was to “…put the spotlight on Black dandyism, which reaches at least as far back as the Harlem Renaissance from 1918 to the mid-1930s style,” according to nbcnews.com.
Each year, the guest list gets better and better. This year’s confirmed hosts and chairs are Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, Anna Wintour, and LeBron James, who got an honorary chair. The guest list included many international artists and actors, such as Shah Rukh Khan and Iké Udé. This year, former vice-president Kamala Harris attended the Met Gala as well.
One of the most important things people discuss is the Met Gala dresses. All over the world, people talk about whether celebrities followed the theme with their unique dress choices and who had the best dresses overall. According to CNN.com, “This year marked the first Met Gala dress code centered on menswear, challenging designers to reinterpret tailoring traditions for their female clients.”
This year, multiple outfits blew fans’ socks off. These dresses belonged to Doja Cat, Tessa Thompson, rapper Doechii, and Janelle Monáe.
Doja Cat had everyone’s mind blown with her dress. Doja Cat is a famous singer, known for her songs “Paint the Town Red”, “Agora Hills”, and “Woman”. Her dress consisted of “a Marc Jacobs crystal pinstriped bodysuit complete with a strong-shouldered wool jacket top and ocelot-print velvet intarsia body. The conical cups, boxy shoulders, and exaggerated hips call back to sculptural elements and skewed proportions present in Jacobs’s recent collections,” based on a Vogue article.
Another guest who had a unique outfit was Tessa Thompson. Tessa Thompson is an American actress who has appeared in movies such as the “Creed” and the “Thor” series. When describing her outfit, CNN claims, “…Tessa Thompson wore a molded ivory tuxedo gown by Atelier Prabal Gurung. She also carried a fan with the image of fashion icon André Leon Talley, paying homage to his legacy. Her look was designed to showcase the dignity and influence of fashion, especially within the Black community.”
Throughout 2025, rapper Docheii or Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon has become extremely popular. Her hits, “DENIAL IS A RIVER” and “Anxiety” have gone viral all over Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. This year, her Met Gala outfit also caught the attention of many people. While many women wore dresses, Doechii surprised people by being “Outfitted in a Pharrell Williams–designed Louis Vuitton short suit with a monogram tuxedo jacket in the brand’s monogram and shorts in the signature damier, she truly embodied the spirit of the night,” states Vogue.
Janelle Monáe is a successful American singer, songwriter, rapper, and actress. Many fans know her from the movie “Hidden Figures”, where she starred as Mary Jackson. She has also written many songs, such as “I Like That” and “Make Me Feel”. This year, her Met Gala outfit comprised a two-piece that acknowledged the 1930s tailoring. The look included a “…duchesse silk overcoat embroidered with grosgrain ribbons in trompe l’oeil patterns of a tie, lapel, and briefcase; a matching floor-length skirt suit beneath; a Magritte-style bowler hat; and, affixed to one eye, a timepiece-monocle hybrid—half clock, half optical illusion,” Vogue claims. What caught the attention of most people was her one-of-a-kind diamond. Her diamond brooch that was attached to her tie was made out of 1800 Tequila, which was inspired by the faceted geometry of the Cristalino bottle and the unique silhouette of the blue Weber agave plant from which the tequila is made.
Overall, the Met Gala is one of the most interesting celebrity events. Many celebrities come together to show their unique fashion and to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, marking the opening of their annual fashion exhibition. The Met Gala is known for the glamorous Red Carpet appearances, intricate costumes, and the exclusive guest list, which includes many celebrities and icons.
