In the Week 9 NFL match, the Dallas Cowboys played the Atlanta Falcons. The 31-year-old quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a hamstring injury. He got injured while twisting his leg and throwing the ball to an open receiver. Medical professionals diagnosed the quarterback with a partial avulsion. This means that a part of Prescott’s hamstring tendon ripped off of the bone and could require surgery to repair. The fans were heartbroken as Dak Prescott went off the field after his last play of the season. What will the Cowboys do without their starting QB?
Dak Prescott ESPN says that 64.7% of his passes were completed, which was 185 passes out of 286 passes completed. He had 1,978 passing yards, and 11 touchdown passes in 8 games. In his career, 66.8% of his passes were completed. He completed 2,780 passes out of 4,159. He had 31,437 passing yards, and 213 touchdown passes in 122 games. In all-time, Dak Prescott is in 8th place in career passer rating.
In what way will this injury affect the Dallas Cowboys? Since Prescott is out for the season, the Cowboys must use their backup quarterback, Cooper Rush. Rush is a 6’3″ quarterback from Charlotte with a 60.6% completion percentage. He has been in the NFL for 7 years while playing for the Cowboys. Ever since Dak Prescott got injured, the Cowboys players and fans have depended on Cooper Rush.
So far, when Cooper Rush plays as their quarterback, the Cowboys have four wins and six losses. Their worst loss was against the Philadelphia Eagles, 41-7. Cooper Rush had two interceptions, one touchdown, and only 147 passing yards, one of the worst losses in the team’s history. These stats show that the Cowboys are weaker without their starting quarterback, Dak Prescott.
Dak Prescott had his surgery on November 13, 2024. The doctor said his surgery successfully repaired the tissue. Even though he will miss the last final 10 games of the season, Prescott says, “I feel good. Still on the crutches. I’ll be on the crutches for a little bit longer but starting to walk a little bit more with my weight.” He described his injury as this, “I felt a pull, felt something I’ve never felt.” He also explains, “I felt it when I was getting up from the run. I can’t even say that I felt it running. Maybe the tackle, maybe something on the tackle, I don’t know. But standing up from that, I felt something, but actually, I didn’t think it was much.” If Dak stopped playing when he felt something pull, he might have had a shorter recovery, instead of putting stress on it for a little longer.
Because of his surgery, he is expected to fully recover and return to the field before the off-season in April. The fans will feel very fortunate that their star quarterback is finally back, and Dak Prescott will be happy to finish his long recovery.
