After 32 years, the FIFA World Cup has returned to America. The FIFA World Cup is the most prestigious and anticipated soccer tournament in the world. This year, the World Cup is taking place in North America, with Canada, Mexico, and the USA jointly hosting the tournament, which represents the highest level of competition in soccer’s history.
The tournament takes place from June 11 to July 19, in 16 host cities. The tournament will mark the United States’ second time hosting the FIFA World Cup, Mexico’s 3rd, and Canada’s first time. The format also marks a significant change to the World Cup: for the first time, 48 teams will compete. There is guaranteed participation from 16 European teams, 8 Asian teams, 6 South American teams, 6 North and Central American teams, and 1 Oceania team, plus 6 international playoff spots. Teams are grouped randomly into 12 groups of 4 in the group stage, where each team plays its 3 other opponents and earns 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. The top 2 teams in each group with the most points advance to the round of 16, and the top 8 third-place teams across all 12 groups advance as well. The US is placed in group D in the group stage along with Paraguay, Australia, and 1 TBD team.
With this expected to be the last World Cup before retirement for many of soccer’s superstars, this year’s games are looking to be a great ending to those players’ careers. Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo

has confirmed this will be his last World Cup, and it is widely believed to be the last tournament for superstars Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luka Modric, Robert Lewandowski, and Olivier Giroud.
While the old superstars are retiring, this year’s World Cup features rising young players. The Spanish soccer team, led by their young star Lamine Yamal, is one of the favorites to win the tournament. His skills were on full display when he won the UEFA Euro 2024 championship at the young age of 17. Yamal has risen to lead the Spanish National Team into a new era. Another team with heavy odds to win is France; their consistent performance, winning the 2018 World Cup and finishing second in the 2022 World Cup, has made them a strong contender to achieve great heights this year. Led by Kylian Mbappe, the team has improved and is striving for its 3rd World Cup title.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is a landmark for the new format and the rise of new players. The anticipation and excitement of the tournament have never been so great in North America. The tournament is the ultimate arena for the world’s best soccer players to showcase their talent and legacy.
