Middle School can be an exciting but challenging time, especially when it comes to balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and personal life. At Fallon Middle School, students may face stress from homework, tests, and social situations. However, many students have developed effective methods to manage these pressures. Our Mustangs have many options available, including leadership courses like PEAC, WEB for new sixth graders, and, of course, Fallon’s counseling team! At Fallon, there are plenty of people for students to talk to when they are going through hard times in school or in their personal lives. Along with personal strategies and community support, students are learning how to stay balanced and focused despite the number of assignments that they receive.
One of the most common sources of stress for students is academic pressure. With multiple classes, homework assignments, and frequent assessments, students can easily feel overwhelmed. To get through this, several students are provided time management techniques like planners (provided by the school), to-do lists, and even digital calendars. When assignments are scheduled into specific time slots, they become smaller, easier tasks rather than one big task, making large projects feel more manageable. Some students also form study groups, like 7th grader Saanchi Mishra who says “Having a small study group of my five friends and I is really useful, because we all have the same teachers but different periods, so if we didn’t catch what one of our teachers said we just ask each other and help each other out, which allows all of us to score well on upcoming tests.”
Another key factor in stress management is maintaining a healthy and stable routine. Students who get enough sleep, eat balanced meals, and stay physically active are scientifically known to handle stress better. Most of Fallon’s students often participate in sports, music, or clubs, which provide a productive break and a quick breather from their academic life. These activities are all provided at Fallon, including 10+ clubs and unions, and many sports teams available for all grades. These activities also allow children to relax, express themselves, and recharge mentally before tackling another school day.
A standout resource at Fallon Middle School is the leadership course PEAC, taught by Mrs. Clemens, which is a team of eighth graders who play a major role in helping students develop emotional awareness and resilience. They also offer peer-to-peer communication and plenty of lunchtime activities to encourage new friendships and a safe environment at school. In this class, students learn about mindfulness, communication skills, and ways to handle conflict and stress. PEAC leaders often organize school-wide activities that promote kindness and inclusion, and create a more supportive place for everyone. By encouraging open conversations about stress and mental health, the course helps reduce stigma and reminds students that they are not alone.
In addition to structured programs, students rely on personal coping strategies. Several students turn to creative outlets like drawing, writing, or playing music. 7th-grade Fallon Mustang Aarin Pradhan states, “I deal with stress by dancing hip-hop, and being with the whole team. Because I’m an officer on the team, just being able to dance and feel free takes the stress out of my day. Another thing that helps me with stress is definitely sports because it allows me to take my mind off of school and gives me a break from everything before I have to get back into it.”
While stress is a common part of middle school life, students at Fallon Middle School have found many effective ways to manage it. Through strong academic habits such as time management, healthy daily routines, and involvement in extracurricular activities, students can stay organized and balanced. Support systems such as PEAC, WEB, and the school counseling team provide a safe environment for students to express themselves and seek help when needed. Along with personal coping strategies like creative activities and spending time with friends by making study groups, these resources help students handle challenges with confidence. Overall, Fallon Middle School creates a supportive environment where students can grow, succeed, and learn to manage stress in healthy, positive ways.
