Big Sports Events to Start the Year

🎾Australian Open: The first Grand Slam major of the year had loads of hype and excitement, which certainly did not disappoint. With major upsets, amazing runs, and a new winner, let’s take a look up close at this prestigious tournament.
During the first round, there were not many huge upsets, and none in the top 15, but as in almost every tournament, some promising players’ journeys are cut short. The world number 20, Flavio Cobolli, was beaten in straight sets by Arthur Fery, who is now ranked well outside the top 150! He still has yet to have a breakout performance this year. Not to mention Arthur Gea, beating #17 Jiri Lecheka in 3 tight sets. There were also some close matches. Tomas Etcheverry barely came through against the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, as he battled his way down 2-1 to eventually win it in 5 fairly tight sets. He is doing well this year, so far.
During the second round, things got a little intense. Spaniard, world number 14, superstar Alejandro Davidovich had a strong start against his 6-foot-11 opponent Reilly Opelka, but the serving beast won the next 2 sets. As the man from Spain was losing hope, he battled his way to a 5-set win

. Also, legend Stan Wawrinka, who is playing his last Australian Open, battled his way on to the 3rd round by beating French phenomenon Arthur Gea in 5 sets, with support from the crowd. But not all memories were meant to be cherished. World number 21 Denis Shapovalov lost in 3 sets against unseeded Marin Cilic, and they were not even close!!
Trudging on to the 3rd round, where mostly only ranked players competed, which brought some close matches! #18 Francisco Cerendulo upset the #13 Andrey Rublev, and swatted him in 3 sets. But the match between #30 Valentin Vacherot and #8 Ben Shelton from the USA was really tight. The #30, who was ranked well outside the top 200 just 4 months ago, showcased a good fight against Ben Shelton, but the American prevailed in 3 tight sets, including 2 really tight tiebreaks separated by 2 points!! Additionally, American sensation Learner Tien was slowly making his move. The 20-year-old, world number 25, beat Nuno Borges to march into his 2nd Australian Open round of 16!! Moreover, World number 5 Italian Lorenzo Musetti beat Tomas Machac despite severe cramping, prevailing in five sets.
Moving on to the round of 16. World number 1 Carlos Alcaraz was one of the first to move on to the quarter-finals as he beat #19 Tommy Paul in three very tight sets. Tommy can still hold his head high, as he played really well and gave the Spaniard a tough challenge. Also, #25 Learner Tien continued his pursuit and defeated #11 Dannil Medvedev 6-4, 6-0, 6-3, and Musetti beat injured Taylor Fritz in 3 sets after a real battle in the last round. As usual, the Italian, #2 Yanik Sinner, won. Not to be forgotten, De Minaur demolished Bublik and took his revenge after a heartbreaking defeat at Bublik’s hands just months earlier. Quarterfinals: #5 Italian Lorenzo Musetti versus #4 Novak Djokovic was supposed to be a blockbuster. But, it wasn’t. Musseti was in his zone, winning the first two sets 6-4 and 6-3, and it looked like he was going to win. After those tedious matches, he suffered an injury and had to retire in the 3rd set! A rare lifeline for Novak Djokovic, and suddenly the veteran and arguably the GOAT of tennis was in the semifinals! Alcaraz and Sinner also won their matches fairly easily, and World #3 Alexander Zverev beat Learner Tien, ending his Cinderella story.
The SEMIFINALS of the Australian Open! Top seed Alcaraz and #3 Zverev started their match first. Alcaraz took the first set 6-4 and the 2nd in a tiebreak. Even though Zverev was up 5-2, the Spaniard looked like he was marching toward the final. But after three Grand Slam finals losses and still yet to win one, Zverev could not lose. He marched back, winning the next two sets in a tiebreak, remaining calm under pressure, and defining the term “he has ice in his veins.” A cramping Alcaraz also benefited him, but Alcaraz did not go down. He bounced back in the 5th set after being down 3-2 and won 7-5 in a 5-hour 27-minute match, collapsing to the ground as he won. Another heartbreak for Zverev, though. I feel bad.
In the 2nd match of the semifinals, #2 Sinner was heavily favored against Novak Djokovic, and after leading 2-1 in sets, Sinner was 99 percent to close it out. But Djokovic, the veteran 24 Grand Slam champion, knew from his experience that it was never over. Djokovic fought back and upset the reigning champion, Sinner, in a grueling 4-hour 10-minute match!
THE FINALS. History was certain, regardless of the victor, as the final match was set – Djokovic versus Alcaraz. If Novak Djokovic wins, it would be his 25th singles Grand Slam, marking the most in history. If Alcaraz reigns, he would be one of the few to win all four Grand Slams at least once. Djokovic won the first set 6-2, but Alcaraz bounced right back, winning 6-2 in the 2nd and 6-3 in the 3rd. One set to win it all! Tied 5-5 in the 4th set. Just maybe Djokovic can extend this to a 5th set, but Alcaraz wins two straight games to be crowned the Australian Open champion and secure his 7th Grand Slam title.
🏈Super Bowl: Two teams, one title. Who is going to win it all? The stacked Seahawks have the best defense in the NFL, one of the best wide receivers (Jaxon Smith-Njigba, JSN), and a good running back, Kenneth Walker III. But the underdogs, the Patriots, with runner-up MVP quarterback Drake Maye, and a pretty sturdy defense, had a decent chance of pulling off a victory. Both finished the season with records of 14-3 in the regular season, and this couldn’t have been a tighter matchup. During the first 3 quarters, both teams made it clear that their defenses are amazing, but the Seahawks were the star of the show. They did not allow the Patriots to score in the first three quarters.
No wonder they are known for their amazing defense. But other than that, after some bad throwing decisions by QB Drake Maye and a dreadful offensive line by the Patriots, they found themselves down 9-0 by halftime, scoring only three field goals.
After a quick halftime show by Bad Bunny, came an uneventful 3rd quarter, especially in respect to the score. The Seahawks added another field goal to their tally, and the Patriots couldn’t get a first down.
4TH QUARTER: After 18 weeks of the regular season, a month of playoffs, and countless quarters, only one remained. After a Seahawks touchdown, the Patriots finally got going. They scored a quick touchdown of their own and got the ball back, and hopes for the Patriots were alive. Yet, Drake Maye threw an interception, which led to a touchdown. A field goal by the Seahawks put the game to bed. The game was over; 29-13 Seahawks.
Finally, Seattle had achieved glory!! Kenneth Walker was the MVP of the Super Bowl after his standout performance, rushing 135 yards. Drake Maye, on the other hand, had a game to forget. A fumble and two interceptions cost the game. However, he can hold his head high for bringing the Patriots, who were 4-13 a season ago to the Super Bowl this year.

Fall 2025: Sports Recap and Memorable Moments

🎾Tennis: As the tennis season comes to a close, these are some of the most insane finishes and massive accomplishments achieved throughout the last couple of months. In the Laver Cup, where top players get split into 2 teams based on their nationality, Team World and Team Europe, which compete against each other to see who gets to 13 points first, Team World reclaimed the title with a score of 15-9. Although this would not been possible without some heroics from Taylor Fritz, who not only beat World #3 Alexander Zverev, but also toppled World #1 Carlos Alcaraz. Moving on to the Masters 1000 Shanghai Open, where Alcaraz withdrew due to a left ankle injury and Jannik Sinner withdrew in the round of 32 because of cramps, the title could not be more open to other top 20 players, who did not have a chance previously, thanks to the dominance of Alcaraz and Sinner. Well, the winner is not who you would expect. Valentin Vacherot, World# 204 before this event who was a player who had to qualify for this prestigious event beat the likes of present day ranking, World #32 Tomas Machac, World #25 Tallon Griekspoor, World #15 Holger Rune, World #11, Alexander Bublik, and even World#4, Novak Djokovic ad then beat his own cousin World #29, Arthur Rinderknech in the final to win it all. What a story. After a couple of other solid performances, he now ranks at World#31. Later, in the Paris masters, after Carlos Alcaraz shockingly lost to unseeded Cameron Norrie in the first round, an underrated opponent who has also caused many upsets, particularly to Carlos Alcaraz, left Sinner with the easiest title of this season. The World #2 took full advantage of the remaining draw and secured title by beating in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime of a score of 6-4, 7-6, and steamrolled Alexander Zverev in the semis, 6-0, 6-1, to inch closer to the World#1 spot. The Nitto ATP Finals, where the top 8 players of the World Rankings play each other for the crown worth 1500 ATP points. In the round robin, most results were expected. Sinner steamrolling opponents. Alcaraz punished the ball if it was too weak. But there were a few upsets and comebacks like Musetti coming back to beat Deminaur after he was down 5-3 in the 3rd set, or the “Demon”, beating Fritz in straight sets after that heartbreak against Musetti and securing a spot in the top 4. In the Semis, Alcaraz and Sinner beat their opponents, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alex De Minaur, respectively, in straight sets. THE FINALS. ALCARAZ VS SINNER. The match started with both players holding serve, but Alcaraz drew a break point at 6-5, 40-30, also threatening set point. But Sinner responded with a big second serve under pressure and sent it to a tie break, which he won 7-4 after a beautiful lob at 5-4 to give him a set point. In the second set, Sinner was down a break early, as he lost his serve right away, but slowly crawled back to 5-5. He then served brilliantly, and now he took the turn to threaten match point. After an Alcaraz backhand was just long, Sinner prevailed, defended his title from last year, and made their h2h closer, now 6-10. Also in the Next-Gen ATP FINALS, where players under 20 compete, clear favorite Learner Tien redeemed himself by taking the crown home after a straight 3-set win over Alexander Blockx, after being runner-up last year. But things weren’t as smooth as they seemed. Tien lost his first match in 5 sets to one of the lowest seeds in the tournament, Rafeal Jodar, and lost the first set 4-1 against 4th seed, Martin Landaluce, but soon got back on track to win it. (Sets are up to 4 in Next-Gen ATP FINALS.)
🏀Basketball: As the NBA season hits its nearly halfway mark, let’s take a look at some wild games, broken records, and highs and lows of teams, players, and much more! In the 3rd season of the NBA Cup, which is a round robin and then single elimination bracket, the Knicks won against Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs in the final 124-113, with Jalen Brunson and OG Anonoby paving the way with 25 and 28 points respectively to claim the title and the prize money of 500,000 dollars. Looking back, just 2 seasons ago, the Pistons were last in the Western Conference, but with Cade Cunningham leading the way, they are now in first place with an impressive 25-8 record. 2 years ago, their win total was just 14—certainly one of the teams to watch. In the Western Conference, the Thunder are dominating. With a record of 30-5, they might just beat the record 73-9 for the season set by the Warriors during the 2016-2017 season. Now, let’s take a look at some outstanding players. Kon Kneuppel and Cooper Flagg, the 2025 draft picks at numbers 4 and 1, respectively, were Rookie of the Month for December in the Eastern and Western Conferences. The 2 players from Duke are averaging over 19 points per game! Also, in my opinion, the best player in the NBA, Nikola Jokic, had a 56-point triple-double against the Minnesota Timberwolves. This guy is literally averaging a 30-12-11 triple-double per game! But not everything in the NBA is good. The Pacers, being an NBA finalist last season, are the lowest-ranked team in the Eastern Conference, mainly because of Tyrese Haliburton’s devastating ACL injury in the NBA Finals Game 7, but they carry a sloppy record of 6-29, the worst in the NBA
🏏Cricket: In a thrilling encounter between India and South Africa, which played 2 tests, a 5-day format, 3 ODIs, a 1-day format (50 overs each), and 5 T20’s, a 120-ball format(20overs each). From this, there are some remarkable highlights and moments. The first 2 test matches were disappointing for India. Their batting was poor; in the first Test, they needed only 124 runs to win but still lost by 30 runs. In fact, it was so poor that the highest score for them through both innings was 39 by KL Rahul. The same story continued in the 2nd Test as the highest score was 58, and they lost by a massive 408 runs, but some of the loss was credited to the Indian bowlers, who let 489 runs slide in the first innings, backed by South African skipper, Senuran Muthusam,y who scored 109. Also, Marco Jansen took 6 wickets in the first innings to dismiss the Indian batters. In the ODIs, Virat Kohli was the superstar. He scored 135 in the first ODI to power India to a win by 17 balls. In the second ODI, Virat scored 102 runs, but India still lost by 4 runs. In the last ODI, India finally clinched the series with a comfortable win, with Kohli chipping in 65 runs not out. Moving on to the T20’s, Hardik Pandya scored 59 in the first game to win the Player of the Match Award and scored crucial runs in the final match to lead Team India to victory. Also, spinner Varun Chakaravaty had 4 wickets in the final T20 to seal the series. To add to that, Jasprit Bumrah achieved a milestone of 100 wickets in T20 matches, and these performances helped India win the series 3-1. (Rain cancelled one of the T20’s) The 2025–26 Ashes between England and Australia have been full of big moments, milestones, and highlights. Let’s take a look. Australia has already clinched the series after winning the first three Tests. One of the biggest highlights was Travis Head’s brilliant 123 off just 83 balls in the first test match, which was one of the fastest Ashes hundreds ever and helped Australia win the match in just two days. Australia’s bowling has also been shining throughout the series, led by Mitchell Starc, who has taken over 15 wickets so far and continued his record of early breakthroughs with the new ball, while spinner Nathan Lyon picked up key middle-order wickets, including a match-winning bowling display in which he took 3 wickets in the 3rd test match. England’s best performance came in the fourth Test at the MCG, where they won by four wickets, thanks to Josh Tongue’s five-wicket haul and important all-round contributions from Ben Stokes, to at least give them some respect down 3-0, now 3-1. A major record was also achieved by Joe Root, who passed 22,000 international runs, placing him among the greatest batters of all time. However, the series has also been affected by injuries, with England missing fast bowler Mark Wood, and arguably the best bowler in the lineup, Jofra Archer, while Australia’s Nathan Lyon injured his hamstring in the 4th test.
🏈NFL: With the NFL playoffs coming on January 10th, let’s take a look at some of the milestones, highlights, and teams that have done well or have lucked out. In the AFC, the Patriots are at the top of the table. With an impressive 13-3 record, the Patriots are definitely making the playoffs and might even get a bye if they have the best record in the conference. Quarterback Drake Maye has been throwing well, and under a revitalized coaching staff led by head coach Mike Vrabel, the team has found success. The only team stopping them from the best record in the AFC conference is the Jaguars. Speaking of the Jaguars, a team that was 4-13 last year and only made the playoffs once in the last 8 years, has finally risen. Now at a commanding record of 12-4 thanks to clutch performances from Trevor Lawrence and his go-to wide receiver Jakobi Myers. Also, a strong roster helps, and first-year offensive head coach Liam Coen is doing wonders.
Meanwhile, one not-so-good team this year is the Chiefs. They have not been finding the same rhythm as the last 5 or so years. Although Patrick Mahomes got injured a couple of weeks ago, they’re 1-8 in 1 score games, and only Travis Kelce is stepping up at the wide receiver end. Not to mention their predictable running plays. They are 6-11. In the NFC, the Bears have finally made the playoffs, mainly because of the significant growth of quarterback Caleb Williams and an opportunistic defense. In the NFC West, one of the best defense teams in the NFL this season, the Seahawks are in the playoffs. Defensive coach Mike MacDonald has really stepped up and created a suffocating defense, leading the Seahawks to a franchise-record 14-3 win-loss record. But the best part is the Niners! They are heading to the playoffs thanks to their explosive offense and Quarterback Brock Purdy’s efficiency, not to mention running back Christian McCaffery’s dominance. They lead the NFL in points per drive.
Meanwhile, one of the thrilling games of the year was the Rams vs Seahawks. The Rams were up 30-14 in the 4th quarter, but Sam Darnold and the Seahawks came back to tie it. The Rams could have won the game if their kicker, Harrison Mevis, had not missed the go-ahead field goal. And so it went to overtime. The Rams scored, but on the Seahawks’ last drive, they scored a touchdown, went for 2 points, and won 38-37. WHAT A GAME. Quarterback Mathew Stafford of the Rams threw 457 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 96 yards to his name.
⚽Soccer: With the Premier League up and running, it is a season to watch. With matches and standings so close that there is little difference between 5th and 14th, let’s take a look at thrilling matches, star players, and some big upsets. A close match was expected from Brentford, the 7th seed, and Everton, the 12th seed. After all, the standings were misleading. Brentford had only 2 more points than the 12th-seeded Everton, so a close match was on the cards. But Brentford’s Igor Thiago had one of the best matches in his career. A HAT-TRICK! As the gun went off,
Thiago drew first blood and scored in just 11 minutes. After, he scored once more in the 51st minute, and finally scored once more in the 88th minute to win 4-2. Not the best day for the goalies, especially Everton’s. The match between the 5th-seeded Chelsea and the 15th-seeded Bournemouth was expected to be an easy victory for Chelsea. Bournemouth scored in the 6th minute, but Chelsea was not going to lose that easily. They clawed back with goals from Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez. Finally, Bournemouth scored once more in the 27th minute, and it was tied 2-2. After that, the goalies stepped up, and nobody could score for the remaining 63 or so minutes! A DRAW! In stats, Erling Haaland leads with the most goals of 19, and Igor Thiago follows with 14. In assists, Bruno Fernandes and Rayan Cherki are tied with 7. In standings, the top 4 teams, Arsenal, Man City, Aston Villa, and Liverpool have qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stage, but sadly, the 18th, 19th, and 20th place teams are in relegation. Currently, those teams are West Ham, Burnley, and Wolves.

Insane Finishes: The Most Unforgettable Moments of Sports
Oct 2025
By Viraj Mane
Tennis: In a high-intensity battle at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Jannik Sinner showcased his killer instinct to outlast Alexander Zverev 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. The Italian’s championship-clinching rally not only secured his fourth title of 2025 but also catapulted him even closer to the coveted world #1 ranking.
Meanwhile, in a thrilling match, 19-year-old phenom João Fonseca exploded into the tennis world’s consciousness with his first-ever ATP 500 title at the Swiss Indoors Basel. The fearless Brazilian toppled Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a barrage of powerful strokes to claim his second career tour title and ascend to a new career-high ranking of #28.
The women’s tour delivered its own electrifying finishes. A decade after her last Tokyo final, the resurgent Belinda Bencic completed her phenomenal return to form with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory over Linda Nosková at the Pan Pacific Open. She now moves up to the rank of World #11. American Ann Li ended a four-year title drought at the Guangzhou Open with a gritty 7-6(6), 6-2 victory over qualifier Lulu Sun. After an intense first-set tiebreak, Li powered through to seize her second career title and surge up the world rankings to World number 33.
Basketball: This past week, the NBA season tipped off with exciting, clutch, unforgettable moments and high-stakes drama. The excitement hit another notch on opening night, when the defending champions, Thunder, outlasted the Rockets in a double-overtime thriller, with MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sealing the 125-124 victory with ice in his veins.
Later in the week, rookie sensation VJ Edgecombe made history for the 76ers, exploding for 34 points in his debut to rally his team past the rival Celtics in a 117-116 nail-biter. The Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama continued his rapid rise, delivering another near triple-double performance in an overtime win against the Pelicans, even after a thunderous dunk from Zion Williamson reminded everyone of the intense competition.
And if that wasn’t enough, the Detroit Pistons pulled off a stunning underdog 119-113 victory against the Celtics, shocking the basketball world and proving that no team can be underestimated this season. In addition, the #1 draft pick, Cooper Flagg, is already averaging over 16 points this season, and the top candidates for MVPs are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic. With epic finishes, breakout performances, and heated rivalries already on full display, you need to see it to believe it.
Cricket: The intense rivalry between India and Australia took center stage across the globe.
In a thrilling Men’s ODI series down under, India fought back from 2-0 down to stun Australia with a dominant nine-wicket victory in the final match in Sydney. Veteran powerhouses Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rolled back the years, with Rohit smashing his 33rd ODI century and Kohli becoming the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, reminding everyone of their immense class.
Not to be outdone, the women’s teams delivered arguably the match of the year in the World Cup. Australia’s captain, Alyssa Healy, etched her name in history, leading an improbable record-breaking run chase against India with a magnificent 142! Her heroics eclipsed India’s record-setting total of 330. In a brutal twist, the tournament was marred by the women’s team losing star opener Pratika Rawal to injury just before their pivotal semi-final showdown with Australia. Beyond the Ashes, the action was equally intense. In the domestic Ranji Trophy, young prodigy Prithvi Shaw, an Indian batter, smashed a double century off just 141 balls, a sensational display of explosive batting.
In a further twist of fate, the West Indies edged out Bangladesh in a T20I thriller, while England’s women’s side secured a convincing victory against New Zealand despite a scare when key bowler Sophie Ecclestone suffered an injury.
From record-breaking individual brilliance to heart-stopping close finishes, these cricket finishes were nothing short of extraordinary.
⚽ Soccer: Professional soccer delivered some incredible, heart-stopping moments this past week, with rivalries blazing and late-game drama erupting all around the world.
The biggest clash was undoubtedly the one in which Real Madrid, the fierce rival, outlasted Barcelona 2-1 in a heated battle that saw late goals from Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. Meanwhile, in the MLS playoffs, we saw some wild finishes, including a Chicago Fire comeback that came up short in a penalty shootout against the Philadelphia Union. And the English Premier League was filled with its own chaos, with teams like Burnley pulling off a thrilling 3-2 victory against Wolves with a last-gasp winner. But perhaps one of the most exciting stories came from the MLS side, San Diego FC, which celebrated its first-ever playoff game with a massive 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers.
It’s clear that no matter the league, soccer players’ skill and determination make every match a potential edge-of-your-seat thriller.
NFL: This whole NFL season has been a rollercoaster of insane finishes and unbelievable plays, not just this past week.
In Week 1, MVP Josh Allen led the Bills to a stunning 15-point comeback victory over the Ravens, a game that broke viewership records. We also saw a phenomenal performance from Jonathan Taylor, who had a career-long 80-yard run and etched his name into the record books by becoming the fifth player since 2000 to have three touchdowns in four games.
In Week 8, Aaron Rodgers made a triumphant return to face his former team and led the Steelers to a thrilling 34-32 win over the Jets, sealed by a 60-yard field goal, the longest in Steelers history.
But the most stunning comeback came this week from the previously winless New York Jets, who clawed their way back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Bengals 39-38, with running back Breece Hall throwing the go-ahead touchdown pass, a feat no running back has done in the final two minutes of regulation since Curtis Martin in 2000.
WNBA: The 2025 WNBA playoffs were thrilling, with the Las Vegas Aces ultimately winning their third championship in four years against the Phoenix Mercury in the league’s first-ever best-of-seven Finals.
The Aces’ path was anything but easy, as they were pushed to a decisive Game 5 against the scrappy Indiana Fever in the semifinals, and had to rely on a clutch Game 3 performance from Finals MVP A’ja Wilson to close out the Mercury.
The Mercury defied expectations by upsetting the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx in four games in the semifinals, capping off their playoff run with a tense Game 4 victory. Even in the earlier rounds, dramatic, close matches were common, including the Lynx’s nail-biting, come-from-behind victory over the expansion Golden State Valkyries and the Aces’ 74-73 Game 3 nail-biter against the Storm.
In the end, the Aces’ experience and superstar power proved enough to win the title, but not before the rest of the league delivered an unforgettable postseason full of incredible performances and clutch moments.

US Open Madness: Upsets, Comebacks, and a New No. 1!
Aug 18–Sep 7, 2025
By Viraj Mane
The final Grand Slam of the year — and maybe the most prestigious — has ended! And wow, after a boatload of twists and turns, here’s everything you need to know.
In the first round, most of the 32 ranked seeds got through, but not without some crazy battles. World No. 24 Flavio Cobolli edged out fellow Italian Francesco Passaro in a five-set, nearly four-hour match. Cobolli barely survived against a guy ranked 120 spots below him! Another close one came when American Brandon Nakashima (No. 30) beat Jesper De Jong in five sets, with the last set being a tiebreak — a real nerve test for Nakashima.
However, there were also some significant upsets. World No. 13 Daniil Medvedev lost to No. 45 Benjamin Bonzi, and let’s just say he was really frustrated after the match. Medvedev hasn’t been in form all year and even lost to Bonzi at Wimbledon. Another upset was No. 28 Alex Michelsen losing to Francisco Comesana in four straight forward sets. And shoutout to Reilly Opelka for making his match close against top seed Carlos Alcaraz.
Then came the second round — and things got weird. It started when the fifth seed, Jack Draper, had to walk off because of an injury. That’s when tennis fans knew it might be a long round for the top seeds. And they were right. Jakub Mensik and Alejandro Davidovich (No. 16 and 18) both lost in five-set matches to French players. Ugo Blanchet — literally a qualifier — took out Mensik, and Arthur Rinderknech, who is always a threat for upsets, got Davidovich. After that, No. 11 Holger Rune crashed out to ANOTHER qualifier, Jan-Lennard Struff. Struff, the serving beast from Germany, looked in form and had too much firepower. Brandon Nakashima again went to five sets, but this time he couldn’t hold his nerve and lost to Jerome Kym. And in a heartbreaker for top-10 seed Karen Khachanov, he blew a two-set lead and lost to Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak. And… let’s just not even talk about Stefanos Tsitsipas. At this point, his losing isn’t even an upset — he barely has more wins than losses this year (21-17).
In the third round, Taylor Fritz battled through a tough four-setter against Jerome Kym, while Novak Djokovic, Tomas Machac, and Lorenzo Musetti cruised through. Carlos Alcaraz absolutely crushed his opponent. But it was a rough round for American fans: Ben Shelton, who just reached a career-high ranking of No. 6, had to retire with a shoulder injury, and Frances Tiafoe lost to Struff (what a Cinderella run he’s having!). World No. 3 Alexander Zverev also lost, this time to Felix Auger-Aliassime, who finally looks like he’s back in form.
Round of 16! Djokovic easily ended Struff’s Cinderella run, and Alcaraz and Fritz got through in three tough sets. Sinner destroyed Bublik — the same guy who beat him earlier this year — 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. The “AI machine” was fully online. Alex de Minaur (“The Demon”) showed off his insane speed and beat qualifier Leonardo Riedi easily, and Felix kept his dream run alive by beating Andrey Rublev in three sets.
Quarterfinals: Novak Djokovic beat Taylor Fritz in four tight sets and then did a K-Pop “Soda Pop” dance — the crowd went wild! Carlos Alcaraz beat Jiri Lehecka (shoutout to Jiri for making the last eight), and Sinner crushed Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the all-Italian showdown. Felix kept rolling by beating De Minaur in four close sets to make his first Grand Slam semifinal since 2021.
Semifinals: The big question — would we get Alcaraz vs. Sinner for the third straight time in a Slam final? Novak gave it everything but lost to Alcaraz in straight sets, the third set looking easy as Novak was out of gas. Sinner dropped the second set to Felix but came back strong to win 6-3, 6-4 and book his spot in the final.
Finals: Whoever won would take the No. 1 ranking. The hype was real. Carlos was going for his sixth major, Sinner his fifth. “Play!” said the umpire, and off they went. Carlos took the first set 6-2, Sinner came right back 6-3, but Alcaraz turned up the heat and took the last two sets 6-1, 6-4. Match over in 2 hours 44 minutes. Carlos wins his sixth major title and is back to world No. 1.
Ranking Updates:
