On January 1, 2026, Zohran Mamdani was officially elected as New York City’s 112th mayor. Mamdani is the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the first South Asian mayor. Not only did Mamdani make history, but many feel he did so in a very inspiring way.
Zohran Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, to an Indian family. According to NPR, Mamdani created a rap music video that spoke to his Indian and Ugandan roots. One verse goes like this, “I got the same history as chapati. Origins of India, but born in UG. Rock-brown skin.” At the age of five, Mamdani moved to South Africa and attended St. George’s Grammar School in Cape Town. The school´s motto was to have the courage to do what is right. This encouraged Mamdani to sustain that quality. Mamdani moved to New York at the age of seven and attended Bronx High School of Science. Later, at Bowdoin College, he earned a degree in Africana studies, which examines the history and culture of African peoples worldwide.
Zohran Mamdani’s unique roots and conscientiousness enabled him to appeal to diverse audiences. However, this wasn’t the only factor that influenced Mamdani’s victory. Andrew Cuomo, the candidate running against Mamdani, came with a list of political concerns.. In 2021, Andrew Cuomo was arrested on charges of sexual harassment, and on July 17, 2021, he was interviewed in a highly confidential video regarding his controversial actions. Interviewers asked Cuomo whether or not he had undergone sexual harassment training, as well as his knowledge of what the consequences of his actions could be. Despite pleading his case, Cuomo was removed from office a little over a month after the interview. Cuomo attempted to make a comeback as mayor, but because of his past actions, he did not receive as many votes as Mamdani (about 41% versus Mamdani’s 51%), which led to Mamdani’s victory.
Before becoming a politician, Mamdani worked as a housing counselor to help less fortunate people in Queens avoid foreclosure. Mamdani later decided to make a positive change in his community, so he entered local politics. According to nyc.gov, “Prior to becoming Mayor, he represented the 36th New York State Assembly District and its neighborhoods of Astoria, Ditmars-Steinway, and Astoria Heights.” Mamdani was always motivated to improve his community as much as possible, even before he became mayor. Many also praise Mamdani’s bravery for running for mayor despite being the only Muslim nominee. Mamdani embraced his faith by visiting many mosques and making campaign videos in Urdu, a language primarily spoken by Pakistanis and Indians, to connect with diverse people.
Zohran Mamdani’s father, Mahmood Mamdani, was born in Mumbai, and his mother, Mira Nair, was born in New Delhi. She became an Oscar-nominated director. Mamdani’s victory in the mayoral election was widely celebrated across South Asia, his father’s homeland, but in India, the opposite was true. Mamdani had made comments in the past calling the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, a war criminal. Although many people in India disapproved of Mamdani after his comments, others agreed with Mamdani’s beliefs and actually supported him for speaking out. In his speech on his election win, he quoted a renowned speech by India’s independence leader, Jawaharlal Nehru, to acknowledge his supporters in India. According to NPR, “He said, a moment comes but rarely in history where we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance. And tonight, he said, we have stepped out from the old into the new.”
After Mamdani won the mayoral election, his wife, Rama Duwaji, became the youngest first lady in New York City’s history at 28. Just one year prior, in February 2025, Duwaji married Mamdani. Duwaji was born to a Syrian family and later traveled to New York to pursue a career as an artist. Mamdani and Duwaji met on the dating app Hinge, which led Mamdani to believe there was “still hope in those dating apps,“ he said, according to the BBC. Many voters questioned Mamdani for hiding his wife from the public. Politicians usually demonstrate their dedication to their families in public. However, Mamdani chose not to put his wife in the spotlight because he wished to prevent any abhorrence toward his family.
The people of New York City are excited to have someone as dedicated to their family and religion as Zohran Mamdani. Just from his campaign videos and speeches, citizens can tell that Mamdani truly wants to do right by them. Despite being the only Muslim nominee, Mamdani embraced his faith and won the mayoral race in New York City.
